Apologetic Derek Webb
I am a fan of Derek Webb.
I think because he’s the first artist of my generation that I heard talk frankly about faith and the Church. I remember listening to his first solo record (“She Must and Shall Go Free”) and being shocked when he referred to the Church (bride of Christ) as a “whore”. At the time, I was still a very young Christian and I didn’t know what to make of that comparison. Now I can see how totally appropriate it is.
I was also a huge fan of Derek when he was in Caedmon’s Call. I LOVE Caedmon’s Call. I learned to play the guitar in 1999 and I taught myself a few of Caedmon’s jams. Then I helped start a band and we tried our best to rip off Caedmon’s Call. We loved how literate and intelligent their lyrics were, so we tried to have that “vibe” as well in our music. But the way we did it just sounded really forced and stupid and self-important. You can’t fake the Caedmon’s vibe. It has to live within you.
When Derek Webb left Caedmon’s Call it made me sad. I didn’t know what to do with this new version of him. He seemed angry and bitter. He rocked the solo undershirt. These were things I was unfamiliar with. I wasn’t used to Christian musicians criticizing Christianity and the Church. If you were a Christian musician you were supposed to write corny songs about how great God is. And you never say words like “whore”.
But as I’ve grown as a Christian and as a creative person, I wish there were more Christian artists like Derek Webb. Artists who aren’t afraid to be transparent and talk about the stuff that irks them. Art can be a great soapbox if the artist is being honest with his/herself.
Derek Webb has just released a new record titled “I Was Wrong, I’m Sorry, and I Love You”. It’s a response to his first record, and, from what I’ve heard so far, it’s pretty great. You should order a copy.
