The Most Awkward Thanksgiving
So here’s a quick look at how an idea is turned into a joke:
I wanted to make a cartoon that was written specifically for the Thanksgiving holiday. So I started thinking about “Thanksgiving stuff” that makes me laugh. The first thing that popped into mind was my family and the different personalities that are always in conflict at family get-togethers. This made me laugh, but I wanted to make sure that the joke and its characters fit Insert Image.
So I tried to think of some prominent figures in Christianity who have been in conflict with each other. It didn’t take long before I remembered the John Piper/Rob Bell debacle from a year-and-a-half ago. Then I asked myself what it would be like if Rob Bell and John Piper were – unbeknownst to each other – invited to the same Thanksgiving dinner. Boom. That’s how The Most Awkward Thanksgiving was born.
If you’re not familiar with the folks in today’s strip and the events which make their meeting a notably awkward one, then allow me to give you a quick walkthrough of the events that provide the backdrop to this cartoon:
First, watch this video.
Second, read this tweet.
Third, read this blog post.
When you’re done with that, watch this video.
Then read this book.
And, finally, read this book.
There! Now you’re completely up-to-speed with all the goings-on behind this comic!
If you live in America, have a great Thanksgiving holiday! If you’re not in America, have a freakin’ great Thursday!
